Grade Ranges Offered for TExES Exams

Most TExES exams are designed to certify an individual to teach for a specific range of grades and there are five different groups of grade levels offered for TExES Exams. The five grade ranges that are offered are EC – 4, 4 – 8, 8 – 12, 6 – 12, and EC – 12. Exams that are designated as EC – 4 are designed for individuals seeking teaching careers from early childhood education, such as teaching kindergarten, up to the fourth grade level. These exams are specifically for individuals that wish to become certified elementary school teachers and these exams only relate to content and responsibilities associated with teaching at the elementary school level. Exams that are designated as 4 – 8 are designed for individuals seeking careers at the middle school level and these exams certify an individual to teach courses from the fourth to eighth grade level.

Exams that are designated as 8 – 12 are designed for individuals seeking careers at the high school level and these exams certify an individual to teach courses from the eighth grade to the twelfth grade. Any exam designated as 6 – 12 is actually designed to certify an individual for both the middle school and high school levels and any exam designated as EC – 12 is actually designed to certify the individual in a particular area for all grade levels. The specific exams that are required for an individual to become certified will depend on the specific teaching position the individual is pursuing.
